Much to love about Megeve

view over Megeve valley

The original home of glamour & luxury in the French Alps remains authentic and attractive for the property investor.

Megeve village squareA medieval mountain village at heart, Megeve retains a timeless atmosphere which, along with its fantastically varied & picturesque ski area, makes this glamorous mountain resort unique. Its history sets it aside from other French ski resorts also, the traditional town was selected as the core of the first purpose-built luxury resort in France back in the 1910’s. Baroness Noemie de Rothschild, of the famous Rothschild banking family, led the development of the resort to be superior as a luxury mountain destination to St Moritz, a jewel in the crown of Swiss Alpine luxury.

The resort has been widely regarded as one of the finest luxury destinations of the Alps attracting the elite & celebrities of the day throughout the last century.

Today the resort is one of many attractive luxury towns of the French Alps & may not shout the loudest but instead retains its dignity & traditional atmosphere whilst being as luxurious as it ever was. Megeve’s location is certainly one of its finest features, being just an hour from Geneva making it attractive to holidaymakers & those visiting their second homes. Being at a lower altitude with both towering mountains & rolling wooded slopes it allows for fantastic scenery & wonderful skiing. Higher altitude modern resorts rarely offer the magical wooded pistes & can never be based on an ancient mountain town as it was simply too cold for medieval mountain folk to live there.

View of Evasion Mont Blanc area from MegeveAs part of the giant Evasion Mont Blanc ski region Megeve certainly offers plenty of piste access with over 400km accessible within the area. There are three areas immediately around Megeve, Mont d’Arbois, Rochebrune and Le Jaillet.
Mont d’Arbois & Rocherbrune are connected by the lift network just outside the town centre whereas Le Jaillet ventures up the wooded slopes opposite connecting with the lifts of the resort of Combloux & La Giettaz and requires some transport or a fair walk to connect with the other areas. The pistes attain an altitude of 2350m and offer a fantastic spread of options for all abilities with plenty of greens, blues and reds and a modest but significant 10% of black slopes. For those looking for the last word in expert skiing Megeve may fall short of the mark but for a magical ski experience it’s hard to beat.

Even in winter Megeve isn’t all about skiing, it’s a popular resort for non-skiers seeking to relax & surprisingly golfers who’re able to ‘snow golf’ at the stunning Mont d’Arbois course. In summer Megeve thrives as a base for walking, climbing, mountain biking, paragliding and a host of other outdoor pursuits. A wonderful place for adventure, for relaxing and especially for the food.

Flocons de Sel michelin star restaurantWhen the ancient food traditions of the mountain valley met the haute-cuisine of the French elite, Megeve became an outstanding place for food. A home to many gourmet chefs cooking for restaurants, hotels & exclusive catered chalets the resort is packed with fantastic food opportunities. A favourite sits astride the Rocherbrune mountain, the 3 Michelin star Flocons de Sel, for those who prize great food above all else we recommend a visit.

More than 200 chalets were built in the early days of Megeve’s transformation and today many more tastefully constructed more modern chalets can be found throughout the town & in idyllic copses & glens in the surrounding country. The local planning has been careful enough to have maintained the perfectly traditional style of the town’s architecture & its delightful cobbled streets & town square. It’s easy to see the appeal of Megeve as a place to own property and yet it’s essential to take great care in finding properties that will fulfill your needs.

Property buyers looking to live in their property and fancy lots of space may wish to look at properties on the outskirts of the town or the quaint surrounding villages, such as Praz sur Arly and Cordon, whereas apartments in central Megeve can be ideal for those wanting a 2nd home right in the centre of the action. Megeve is an exclusive & luxurious holiday destination, as such a property that’s intended for the holiday rental market must find it’s target customer in an affluent but multi-layered potential customer base.

beautiful Megeve sceneryMegeve attracts the modestly wealthy & super-rich alike & holiday businesses can succeed hugely in the market by ideally meeting the needs of a particular segment of holidaymaker. When seeking to buy property in Megeve with the renting in mind, it’s important to plan the commercial strategy of the property before committing. A property away from the lifts may be impossibly appealing as a place to live and offer a highly luxurious opportunity for affluent holidaymakers, however the luxury customer is likely to reject the idea of walking with skis to the lifts and so running that chalet as a business may require operating a ski chauffeur service and adding to the business costs.

Nevertheless Megeve is a unique & highly desirable place to own a ski chalet whether for private enjoyment, holiday rentals or a bit of both.
