The weather continues to astound locals in the French Alps

Snow is causing problems for the mountain biking fraternity though the forecast for June is sunny and warmer.

But for the moment a few diehard ski randonneurs are making the most of the wintry conditions. I can report that there is a considerable amount of snow on the higher pistes in the Portes du Soleil, certainly more than enough to justify a hike up the Harare from Avoriaz.

On a cloudy day after more overnight snow the conditions on May 30th for ascending on randonee skis and skins were excellent and with only two other tracks on the mountain, the scene was earily tranquil. Brief moments of sunshine brought the mountain to life, the snow sparkling in the sun’s rays. Difficult to believe that Summer is just around the corner.

Tearing my skins off at the top of the Harare lift I knew it was time for me to start heading home, though brave tracks continuing towards the Hautes Fortes momentarily tempted me to continue. The descent was a mixed affair – the top half light enough to string together some nice powder turns, the bottom half becoming heavier and heavier resulting in this blogger to embrace the snow unexpectedly and with much vigour.

Driving back down the Route d’Avoriaz I knew that the skis would soon be packed up until next winter, taking the place of the road bike in the garage. The lush greens of the trees welcomed me back into the valley and the sun reappeared, making the hour and a half of snow fun I’d just had seem like a figment of the imagination.
