Moonlit ski touring in St Gervais

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

After a slow start to the winter in the Alps conditions are finally coming good with a week of new snowfall last week down to 800m ski conditions are now good in most resorts. The storm cycle of new snow moved through on Wednesday evening being replaced by a high pressure, which has meant clear sky’s and great ski conditions for the start of the holidays. The new snow followed by a rise in temperatures has given rise to a number of avalanches on North facing slopes as demonstrated by the tragic events in Tignes this week.

Off Piste and ski touring conditions are good at the moment but consider using a guide or other mountain professional if venturing away from the piste.

We have had an amazing full moon this week with the mountains being lit up all evening as if there was a searchlight shining on them. It is rare to have good ski conditions and such a natural nocturnal illumination. We decided to take advantage of this by going for a night skin through the Saint Gervais lift system to the Folie Douce (It was closed unfortunately!). We enjoyed amazing views of the mountains then skied down freshly groomed pistes by the light of the moon (Please don’t tell the ski area it was us!!).
